Shanghai Maglev Train

The magnetic levitation (maglev) train runs between Pudong International Airport and Longyang Road station in Pudong, a distance of around 30 km. The train reaches a speed of 430 km/hr (267 mph) and the ride takes eight minutes only. It was built between 2001 and 2004, and although it was the third maglev line is the world to be built, it is the only commercially operated high speed maglev in the world. There had been low speed maglev trains, but none like this. There were plans to extend the line beyond Pudong, but these are currently on hold.

The track (or guideway – the train "hovers" just above the track, supported by magnetic fields) was built by Chinese companies and the train by a joint venture of Siemens and ThyssenKrupp, for Germany’s Transrapid International, as a demonstration project in the hope of generating more sales of the high speed maglev.

The train operates between 06:45 and 21:40 and runs every 15 minutes between 06: 45 and 19:02 and every 20 minutes thereafter. Longyang Road station is some distance out, so visitors may need to travel on from there into central Shanghai by bus, taxi or metro.
