Shaoxing

Brief Introduction

Shaoxing, whose name was given to it during the Song Dynasty, is well located in relation to Shanghai and Hangzhou, making it a fantastic side destination. It is known for its colorful culture, traditional, unique landscapes owing to the Yangtze River, and ancient architecture. There are many waterways that cut through the city along with over 4,000 old stone bridges of all sizes and styles.

This beautiful scenery has caused it to be home to many famous Chinese politicians such as China’s first premier, Zhou Enlai, and literary geniuses such as Lu Xun. Shaoxing set the location for the majority of Xun’s works. Further lending a connection between yesterday and today are the many classrooms, gardens, shops, and stages that still exist.

Since the city is more than 4,000 years old, it also has countless historical relics to boast. Dayu, a leader of an old tribe, is said to have visited Shaoxing twice in investigations for water control. Today’s visitors can visit his mausoleum and learn about his journey and influence.

Weather

Like many other areas of China, Shaoxing has a subtropical and monsoon climate. The best time to visit the city is from May to October when the temperature is mild and the sceneries are most beautiful. However, this is also the rainy season when you may encounter rainstorms for part of all of the day. Another pleasant time to visit Shaoxing is in April when nature comes alive and the city becomes green with life. The average annual temperature is 16 degrees Celsius.

Arrive

Flight

The most convenient airport is Hangzhou International Airport, from which you can then take a bus or train to reach Shaoxing. The airport shuttle takes about 1 hour with a stop on the way.

Train

There is one main station in Shaoxing located on Chenzhan Road. There are frequent routes to and from Shanghai, Ningbo, and Hangzhou most commonly.

Bus

There are 4 main bus stations for commercial use in Shaoxing with the Shaoxing Passenger Transit Center the most used. This is where you will find most departures reaching Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Shanghai among other destinations nearby and beyond. Bus is indeed the easiest way to reach this city.

Accommodation

Shaoxing has a host of hotels of different star-grade and budget accommodation is easy to find. The Shaoxing Dynasty Hotel and Yuedu Hotel are among the best deals. those who seek more luxurious lodging may find the Shaoxing International Hotel and Shaoxing Xianheng Hotels are good places to stay.

Food

The most standout feature of food found in Shaoxing is that much of it utilizes a local delicacy called Shaoxing Yellow Rice Wine. This cooking wine is made from a special variety of glutinous rice and adds a very distinctive flavor to all dishes.

In general, Shaoxing food tends to be light and crisp. Not much oil is used in the cooking process so the natural flavors of the fresh ingredients are upheld. You will easily find freshwater fish, shrimp, poultry, and beans featured in the local cuisine. Be sure to try Shaoxing Chicken which is prepared by marinating the breast meat in the local wine.

There are many fine restaurants in which to enjoy yourself. But if you are looking for a cheap but delicious meal, patron the street stalls along Jiefang Bei Lu.

There are many interesting sites to see in Shaoxing including the East lake, Zhou Enlai’s ancestral home, and much more. Below we present some of the other top destinations you should not miss on a visit to this rich city.

Lanting (Orchid Pavilion)

This ancient pavilion is considered a sacred site for many Chinese as well as calligraphy enthusiasts. The old calligraphy master Wangxizhi who lived in the East Jin Dynasty is said to have written this masterpiece anthology here. Nearby the pavilion, you will also see marvelous natural scenes involving calm rivers, bamboo forests, and other delicate pavilions.

Former Residence of Lu Xun

One of China’s most famous writers, Lu Xun, was born in Shaoxing and spent much of his life here. His works reflect the life and soul of his city and remain proud products from Chinese history. His house today has been restored and fit for visitors who come to admire the more than 100 rooms and beautiful central garden set in a very traditional Chinese style of architecture.

Yu's Mausoleum

Xiayu was a water-control hero from the Xia Dynasty and today, this mausoleum honors him and his work from thousands of years ago.

Recommended Itinerary

Here is an ideal itinerary for 2 days in Shaoxing:

Day 1: Arrive in Shaoxing, visit the Former Residence of Lu Xun, XianHeng Hotel, and Shen Garden.

Day 2: Visit Da Yu Tomb Scenic Area, East Lake, and Lanting Pavilion; depart Shaoxingin the afternoon or evening.
